Curated by Louis Pohl Koseda, the recent Christie’s Award winner, the show features over 20 groundbreaking new artists living and working in London. These artists are key figures in the emergent movement, transcribing the city’s cultural codes. The show, titled ‘Metafictions of post-post-postmodern’, repositions space to become a postmodern cathedral for central London, drawing from the building’s initial design.
Deconstructing the City of London’s physical, public, market architecture Artists engage with postmodernist deconstruction theory, the philosophical approach developed by Derrida. ‘Metafiction’ is a device where a story draws attention to its fictional nature, often through self-awareness and commentary on the creative process.
The show deconstructs the idea of a white wall gallery into a fluid space where symbolic art and architecture are synchronised. Artists embrace allegory, where no single intrinsic meaning exists, but rather causal, linking threads, like the return of figurativism. The body is universally understood, allowing global communities to use it as a method of universal communication.
Beyond abstract art, figurativism is gaining license as the post-globalisation form of art, reflecting a need to reach beyond the written word for a more innate means of sharing experiences.
