Three decades after the closure of Alvar Aalto Architects Ltd., and half a century after the death of its founder, what is the verdict? How does the portfolio measure up to critical reflections on its value and meaning in the 21st century? What has been, and is, the afterlife of the Aalto oeuvre? This lecture appraises the work and thought of Finnish modernists Alvar, Aino and Elissa Aalto through a distinctly contemporary lens. Interrogating both the tangible and intangible legacies of the practice, it evaluates how the Aaltos’ distinct genre of ‘humane’ modernism has stood the test of time—and whether it measures up to its hoped-for status as World Heritage.
