Fire, Water, Modernism is an immersive journey through the majestic post-war architecture of the City of London.

Fire, Water, Modernism is an immersive journey through the majestic post-war architecture of the City of London. We’ll discover the ancient origins of London, and understand the ways the Square Mile’s historic boundaries, heritage and customs might have informed its modern planning. We will hear about the power and ceremony of London’s Medieval Guilds, and see it projected to this day through the refined Modernism at Guildhall and Salter’s Hall. We will also explore the monumental architecture of the Barbican and Golden Lane estates, recounting the historic events and disasters that forged and guided the City’s aspirations through centuries.

The City of London is shaped by fire : as in the Great Fire of London which consumed its medieval quarter. The City of London is embraced by water : as in the ancient Thames and the secret culvert of river Fleet, once the forming the boundary of the Roman settlement of the past. More recently, the City of London rose from its ashes through the maelstrom of the Blitz, like a mythical phoenix, in a plume of monumental post-war Modernism. In this new walk, we will connect the dots, discover hidden and mystical landmarks and their connections with the City’s lore. and course through centuries of history hiding in plain sight
