Elain Harwood’s talk celebrated the De La Warr Pavilion’s 87th anniversary and the launch of her book, Mid Century Britain: Modern Architecture, 1938-1963.
The talk was exclusively for DLWP Members & Patrons. It took place via Zoom, on 13 December 2021. It was delivered in collaboration with The C20 Society.
Elain’s talk and book survey British architecture from 1938 to 1963. These mid-century buildings are growing in popularity, and we have an ever-increasing understanding of their importance as a background to our lives.
Postwar British architects often saw architecture as a powerful means to improve the quality of our lives after the shadow of war.
This is the fascinating story of what they built to meet that challenge. The buildings range from the Royal Festival Hall and Newcastle City Hall to Deal Pier and Douglas ferry terminal, from prefabs and ice cream parlours to Coventry Cathedral and the Golden Lane Estate. Elain explored the design and architecture of these buildings and more, and their influence on our lives, towns, and cities.
